A Bit Of A Stretch

For those of us who remember those years when Shiv Chanderpaul seemed like the only one actually playing for the West Indies it seems very strange for Ernest Hilaire to lump him in with all those other guys who did not provide "application and discipline" over the last 15 years. He is smiling here but not with the slur on his name. Seems to me from this great distance that it is the West Indian administrators who have most lacked application, discipline and nouse over the last decade or so.

A Player Less Ordinary

Chanderpaul is just different, and thank God for that.

It doesn't matter that he has a helmet on, you know who he is from first sight and things just get quirkier from there. Congrats on his award, but more importantly, where are we going to find more characters of quality like him?

Chanderpaul should not be kissing the ground. All of the West Indies should be planting a big wet one on him. How many times has this little rock anchored them in the last few years? Plenty!

I love Chanderpaul.

He is just so different.

Some players roll their wrists, this guy seems to roll his whole body around a shot. He has a way of dismissing the ball from his presence that I could watch forever.

Chanderpaul is a bloody legend! How many guys his size have carried an entire team on their backs? The fact that he does it his own way and in his own time is even more entertaining.

Perspective is a wonderful thing. At the moment it is easy to think of Chanderpaul as totally dominant, but of course it hasn't always been that way. The chart above shows that there have a few lean times as well, which is only to be expected over a lengthy career. A big part of this game is the anticipation of what could happen next.
